2 Week Log Building Courses 2019

The following course will be held in May and June 2019 on the school’s training site at Lillehammer, Norway (Same course, 2 dates). Instruction in english and norwegian. For sign-up: please see the bottom of this page. Maximum 8 students per course.

2 weeks: Mon 29 April to Friday 10 May 2019.
2 weeks: Mon 17 to Friday 28 June 2019.

Type of course:

15 cm side-cut logs

Week one:  6 days on log walls
  • Material properties 
  • Tool handling and maintenance 
  • Site preparation 
  • Log handling techniques 
  • Corner notch and scribing
  • Drilling and placing dowl pegs 
  • Horizontal channel 
  • Door and window openings 

Sunday : Visit to Maihaugen Open Air Museum in Lillehammer. Huge collection of historic log buildings dating back to the middle ages.

Safety-wear, (trousers) eye and ear protection, are mandatory and must be provided by you. Logs are prepared before the course. Following norwegian tradition, logs are hand-peeled, dried to 20% moisture content, then hand-planed.

 We use spruce.

Side-cut logs are 15 cm ( 6 inches )

Accomodation in log cabins 5 mins walk from course site. 
Bedding sheets provided but no food (self-cater). Accomodation is equipped with kitchen, wc and shower.  Foodstore: 3kms 

Course outcome: upon completion of the course, students will have gained enough skill and understanding of Norwegian log building, to start with projects of their own. Daily hands-on training from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm. Several of the evenings have lectures/group work. Course languages: English and Norwegian.

Travelling to the Norwegian School of Log Building:

Oslo International airport is 147 kms south of Lillehammer. During the day, trains go from the airport to Lillehammer every hour. The school will help you with transport from the railway station to the course-accomodation (8 kms)
